Apply to be a Foster Parent

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, please apply! A Nunavut child or youth could benefit from having a foster parent like you.

The key criteria for becoming a foster parent are being able to provide a safe caring home for a child or youth, and being able to fulfill the foster parent roles and responsibilities. You must also have a clean criminal record. (Occasionally exceptions are made depending on the nature of the offence and the unique care situation).

Foster Parent Application

You can now apply online. A good place to begin is reviewing the Foster Family Manual. It contains the guidelines, roles and responsibilities for becoming a foster parent.

Here is the application process:

  1. Fill out the Foster Parent Application Form.
  2. Have your medical practitioner (physician/nurse) complete and sign the Foster Parent Medical Examination Form.
  3. Complete a Criminal Record Check at your local RCMP detachment.
  4. Get reference letters from three people who know you well. Your references should speak to your character, any past experience as a foster parent, any training or education that would make you a good foster parent, and any other information you think would enhance your application.
  5. Return the completed forms and reference letters in person to your local Social Services office.

You may also apply in person through your local Social Services office. Ask for a foster parent package and Foster Family Manual.
